2026 Annual Meeting Local Organizing Committee Representative
Dr. Robert A. Payn (Rob) is a hydrologist at Montana State University. He started attending NABS/SFS conferences at the La Crosse meeting in 2001 and has only missed one, since. While he spends more time than is reasonable thinking about water movement, the exercise is usually associated with questions about controls on environmental water quality or stream ecosystem function. He was born and raised on a small farm in Ohio and got a BS in Electrical Engineering at The Ohio State University in 1994. While working for 7 years as a computer network engineer, he got into caving as a hobby and ended up spending his weekends and vacations helping his graduate student caving buddies collect data. That prompted a move back to academia with a Masters in Biology from Virginia Tech in 2004 and a PhD in Hydrology from the Colorado School of Mines in 2009. A postdoc in hydrologic and ecosystem modeling at Montana State led to a faculty position, and he has been teaching and advising students in hydrologic science since 2013.
